Tokyo Tower: 1,100 Feet Tall
Standing at the top observation deck of Tokyo Tower, you can see the entire city in every direction! You can stare straight down at the Imperial Palace. On a clear day you can see Mount Fuji. It’s a truly amazing view. Tokyo Tower is a sight not to be missed. If you are touring around Tokyo, its one of the must-see places!
Tokyo Tower is located smack dab in the middle of the city, in Tokyo’s Minato-ku ward. It’s right in the middle of a city block, rising up to the sky higher than you can even see. For one thing, this makes it easy to visit, since its right in the middle of everything.
When you first see it, you might thing, “Wait a minute this looks suspiciously like the Eiffel Tower!” Well, you’d be right to notice the resemblance. Tokyo Tower’s design is based on the Eiffel Tower. It was built in the 1950’s as a symbol of Tokyo’s ascendancy as an economic power. All the other great powers have a famous tower, so why shouldn’t we? That’s good thinking!
But, Tokyo was not to be outdone. Tokyo Tower is quite a bit taller than Eiffel Tower, and a lot lighter. It’s the tallest free-standing iron structure in the world. It looks like Eiffel Tower, but actually the resemblance ends there. The design is much more modern and everything else about it is totally different.
Inside the Tower are many interesting attractions. There’s an aquarium on the first floor with over 50,000 fish. It’s really a sight to see. I can honestly say I’ve never seen an aquarium like that anywhere. The third floor has a big wax museum, which everybody visits. But, my favorite part of the whole Tokyo Tower experience is the Trick Art Gallery on the fourth floor. You really have to see it to believe it. After spending some time in there, you’ll be so disoriented you might have to stop at one of the many coffee shops or restaurants for a breather!
Finally, the top. There are a series of observation decks in Tokyo Tower, depending on how high you want to go. Of course I chose the highest. I’m not afraid of heights, but when you’re that far up there you suddenly begin thinking, ÂgBoy, is this thing good and sturdy?Âh You can swear you can feel the wind blowing. Your vision swims a little when you look down from the windows.
The first time I went up Tokyo Tower I was lucky. It was a clear, sunny day, and I could see all the way into Tokyo Bay on one side and Mount Fuji on the other. It’s the kind of amazing view where your pictures just don’t do it justice. Tokyo Tower is a place you have to go if you visit Tokyo.
