Japan history is a unique part of the Japan travel experience. The country is alive with history, with interesting historical sights everywhere.
The earliest signs of civilization in Japan show that they were hunter gatherers with some limited farming. Few know facts about early Japan, but they were one of the first societies in the world to make pottery.
Around the 8th century, Japan began receiving ideas and technology from China and Korea on a massive scale. Among the things that came to Japan were Buddhism and Chinese writing. This is officially the beginning of the state of Japan, and the time of its first emperor, who was supposedly descended from a Shinto god.
The next hundred years was JapanÂ’s classical age. This was the era where Japan developed its culture through literature and art, and Buddhism flourished.
The era starting in the 12th century is generally regarded as JapanÂ’s medieval era. This was a time where Japan was ruled by a warrior class, the bushi. This is also the time when the samurai class came into being. During this era, there was constant warring between groups vying for power.
After this period, Japan was closed off from the world. This was the official policy of the ruling Tokugawa shogunate. Aside from some limited trade with the Dutch, Japan was closed off from the rest of the world for two hundred years. This era in particularly lends Japan much of its uniqueness. This is known as the Edo period, when the capital was moved to Tokyo.
With the Meiji Restoration in 1867, Japan was opened up again. Japan had been visited twice in the preceding decade by Commodore Matthew Perry of the United States, who forced the country to open up to foreign trade. During this era, Japan tried to disassociate itself from Asia and adopt western institutions. Japan inherited western ideas and institutions for its education system and government. It also inherited the idea of military expansion, and began on the destructive path that would eventually lead to its defeat in World War II.
No country in the world has recovered from a defeat in a major war like Japan has. After the US occupation ended, Japan set about rebuilding its country from the ravages of war. It is truly amazing what has been achieved in so short a time. The result is one of the safest, wealthiest, most democratic and technologically advanced countries in the world.
In Japan today, one can still see the influences of every era of history. Japanese people are very conscious of their history and its meaning. People of all ages and backgrounds visit temples and historic monuments all throughout the year.
If you are interested in historical sightseeing, Japan is one of the best places in the world to go.
