You can also take ferries and boats from one island to another. For example, there is a boat line that goes from the northern tip of Honshu to the beautiful city of Hakodate in Hokkaido. Some of the remote, outlying islands are only accessible by boat travel!

Of course, it is much faster to travel by train or airplane, but with a boat trip, you can see the countryside at a more leisurely pace. An overnight boat trip might be a good opportunity to make some friends!

Also, wherever you are staying in Japan, go to the local travel bureau and see what information they have. At most major cities they can assist English-speaking travelers.

Doing Japan by sea is a great way to see the sights at a leisurely pace, and see some of the out-of-the-way places you might otherwise not have a chance to!
